Rub my Magic Lamp....No Basket!

Genie_lamp

In the run up to the panto season, we all know really that the genie in the lamp is just make believe right? 'Oh yes he is!....'

If our wonderful team at Electric Wholesale could grant you one (work related – steady!) wish this festive season we reckon many of the wishes would include 'quicker job completion' – wouldn't it be great if you could speed up those jobs – especially the monotonous side of things – like cutting, shaping, cable tying and instead spend your time focusing on the actual job in hand.

Unfortunately we don't have a magic lamp amongst us – sorry to disappoint – but we do have a fantastic new product called a magic basket.

The magic basket is made by Unitrunk – total cable management solutions – so I'm sure you know where we're going with this one!

Those who work within industrial environments will know all to well how time consuming installing cable management systems currently are – particularly in relation to continuity of earth and time spent installing earth straps and joins.

The magic basket is an ingenious product designed to save you huge amounts of time and simply clips together ensuring earth continuity. Fast and simple fitting without the need for screw connectors or special tools, the system offers a highly flexible solution regardless of the complexity of the cable system. The unitrunk magic basket is a mesh cable tray – allowing for excellent ventilation of cables and manufactured using some of the latest technology, the OBO GR Magic cable tray system has been tested and approved for E30 and E90 Fire Rating and offers the installer a fast, flexible and reliable range of the highest quality (couplers not required). Cable routes can be laid quickly and with ease – a great advantage with any installation and therefore granting your Christmas wish of quicker job completion! :)

Electric Wholesale currently stock 2 versions of the Unitrunk mesh cable tray – GRM100 and GRM150. There are 3 finishes available – Electro Zinc Plated, Hot Dip Galvanised, and Stainless Steel. Also available in a choice of sidewall heights 35mm, 55mm and 105mm.

So if you are still not convinced that Aladdin does actually exist with Electric Wholesale please give us a call on Bristol 0117 982 0005 or London 0208 9814000 and Aladdin may actually pick up the phone! Alternatively check out our website at www.electricwholesale.co.uk

The dangers of touching what you can't see

We all know about the health and Safety at Work Act 1974. We know its important to abide by it - falling foul of it can be costly in terms of money and reputation. We are not here to lecture you on it though! Here are just a few gentle reminders for you whether you are an employee or employer.

Most of us consider dangerous working conditions to include heavy loads and spills on floors. When we walk into a warehouse for example, how many of us consider the lighting?

OK if we can't see to work then we would switch on the lights! But how do we know if the lighting is safe?

Poor lighting can lead to eye strain amongst office workers, head aches and general lethargy to anyone who spends their working days in this environment, as well as appearing unpleasant and very costly to the employer in terms of electricity consumption and maintenance costs. It also increases the likelihood of accidents when handling loads and lead to poor posture if you are struggling to see what you are doing.

If your workplace contains machinery, the wrong lighting can have devastating consequences - there are many accidents pertaining to machinery. According to the Health and Safety Executive, manufacturing accounts for 56 per cent – or 2,160 cases in 2009/2010 – of reported injuries involving contact with moving machinery.

At Electric Wholesale we offer bespoke solutions for our clients. These are electrical solutions that cannot be brought off the shelf at other wholesalers – (although of course we do fulfil these requirements too.) We have helped our clients to find complex electrical solutions for their customers.

A recent solution we suggested for use within a manufacturing environment shows how important it is for employers to meet their obligations under the health and safety at work act – but it does not have to come at great addition expense – our solution enabled the layout of the working environment to be maintained, whilst saving significant costs to the company in terms of electricity consumption and energy efficiency.

The project in question was for a company known as Kelston Precision Gears. The location was an old printing factory with very poor lighting The current electrical arrangements consisted of inefficient switch start 100W (8ft) battens that were mounted at 8m which made maintenance very difficult. These lights only offered 200 lux so were completely impractical for a manufacturing company.

The battens also exhibit flicker causing stroboscopic effect. This is dangerous when operating CNC machinery that Kelston do, as it makes rotating machinery appear stationary. This would almost certainly add to the above statistics of workplace injury involving contact with moving machinery!

The brief given to Electric Wholesale was to offer an efficient solution that would not only reduce energy consumption but would avoid stroboscopic effect, supply a whiter and more pleasant light with a lux level of over 400 and provide uniform lighting to the central area where the majority of the machinery is based.

Electric Wholesale offered a bespoke cable management system that enabled them to run supply from distribution boards around the outside and re-rooted the existing bus-bar system so that the lighting layout could be reconfigured.

The 4x80W T5 lowbay luminaires offer high frequency operation, extended lamp life with reduced maintenance costs, massively reduced energy consumption and a more pleasant working environment for the employees.

Our client came to us in need of our help, and once again Electric Wholesale delivered.

We are very proud of our successes which is down to our professional engagement with both our clients and the electrical industry. Our clients come to us seeking our help knowing we can deliver on time everytime.

If you need some sound electrical advice, simply need to pick something up from one of our branches – we have huge stock by the way and you can take away today what other wholesalers have to order for you – so please do check with us first – we are confident we can get you earning on your job today! Solar after FiT Cuts – why the sun is still shining

We all know about the recent FiT cuts where the government announced a cut from 43.3p per kilowatt hour (kWh) to 21p (kWh) with effect from December 12th has not been the best news for the fledgling renewables industries.

What cannot be taken away from our industry is the excitement of the inevitable change from fossil fuel dependence to renewable sources for our energy needs. The industry is still attracting many housing associations, industry professionals as well as consumers interested in renewable energy all wanting to play a part.

So, to get the most out of your solar PV installation, we believe that you should take a step back from rushing ahead to meet the government deadline. To run solar PV efficiently, your home needs to be as energy efficient as possible before having fitted the solar installation – this way your energy costs will already be as low as they can be and therefore you will gain maximum benefit from having solar panels even if your return is the new 21p kWh. If you are fitting solar panels today for example on a home which does meet the forthcoming energy efficiency requirements, the amount of energy you would be consuming will be higher therefore your return would not be any better than the new rate of 21p. As an example, if you are using twice the energy currently, because of poor energy efficiency within your home, the benefits of receiving 43.3p would be eaten up. Your home is not being as efficient as it could be, thereby defeating your object – and your return would not be any better than someone on the lower tariff rate of 21p.

To get your home as energy efficient as possible take a look a look at direct gov – it contains useful information on getting your home more efficient http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Environmentandgreenerliving/Energyandwatersaving/Renewableandlowcarbonenergy/DG_072593 in particular, if you have downlights in your home, these can be changed over to low energy LED lamps – a standard halogen downlight lamp would be rated at 50 watts and equivalent low- energy LED version on this would be anything between 2 and 4.5 watt – food for thought!!

Here at Electric Wholesale we offer a personal unique service tailored to finding the right solution based on your solar and all other electrical needs in your home. If you are considering having solar panels in your home, are an electrician or solar PV installer then Electric Wholesale is your one stop shop. Offering the best products available and advice not found at other wholesalers from our staff who are always happy to recommend the right products for your needs based on their expertise, knowledge and enthusiasm for the electrical industry and its needs.

For advice, recommendations and quotations on your solar needs, energy efficiency products and your home electrical needs, please call our branch in Bristol on 0117 9820005 London 0208 9814000 or see our website at www.electricwholesale.co.uk You don't need to be local, we can always help, your call will be answered with knowledge – we do not work from catalogues, our knowledgeable and friendly staff are able to help you with all aspects of your solar PV requirements – even down to sourcing an installer!

Why on Earth Would you NOT have an RCD?

In a survey carried out by the electrical safety council, only around 50% of homes have an RCD installed.

Do you know what an RCD is and what it does?

This new survey and research carried out recently have revealed some pretty worrying electrical blunders that many of us are making without realising resulting in at least 50 deaths per year in the UK from an electrical mistake.

Some interesting statistics – some are crazy but true!

* A third of young people have touched a light switch, socket or electrical appliance with wet hands, which could result in a shock.

* 1 in 5 people have had an electrical accident because they were using a faulty appliance

* 23% of people researched have repaired an electrical appliance while still having it plugged in, risking electric shock

* Recent research suggests that nearly 50% of people have not used an electrician in their home in the last 5 years.

Does this make you sit up and think.....Gosh I didn't know that was dangerous, time to change my ways! If it has, then this blog has done its job and potentially saved a life.

For half of householders, its time to call in an electrician – your electrics might well be fine, but in the same way you service your car, your boiler, appliances etc it makes perfect sense to ring a qualified electrician to come and carry out an electrical survey of your property – they do not cost much – less than an average car service, and this does not need to be carried out annually, The IET (Institute of Engineering and Technology) recommend once every 10 years. The electrical survey consists of 2 parts – a visual check known as an inspection and then a test on the electrical system of the property.

An electrician will not be looking to see what they can make out of you, and they won't cringe when they spot your original 70's wiring :) they would firstly carry out a visual inspection of the properties electrical system. This includes checking things like loose switches, sockets, broken light fixtures and fittings and will also take a look at your consumer unit to check for the presence of an RCD. So to answer our initial question, an RCD is there to save your life (in short!) if an appliance or electrical system develops a fault, or if you were unfortunate enough to touch a live cable, the RCD would cut the power off, which in the best case saves your life – leaving you unharmed, and another main reason to prevent fires caused by malfunctioning electrical items.

Then comes the technical bit! The electrician then take readings of the electrical system and collate the information along with the visual inspection and give you a report and any recommendations of any works that need to be carried out.

If any electrical work does need to be carried out, your electrician can come to Electric Wholesale for their materials, where you can be assured they meet the highest standards of electrical safety. http://www.electricwholesale.co.uk/ we have excellent relationships with our suppliers and our knowledgeable staff ensure we only stock top quality items that meet all the requirements for its intended use.

Why we hold the largest stock of wholesale cable in the UK

Arctic_cable

Electric Wholesale, being a market leader in the supply of site supplies holds an enviable range of all cable types - in fact we hold the UK's largest wholesale stock of 1.5mm 3 core - the most popular cable used mainly for lighting including temporary outside lighting, such as site lighting.

As well as 1.5mm 3 core arctic cable which is the most popular stocked by most wholesalers, we anticipate and acknowedge that not all jobs are the same, and therefore stock other sizes of cable without the need of waiting around for special orders.

Our huge range of arctic cable suits all requirements and includes 1.5mm 4 core used mainly for 2 way lighting, leaving an extra core for a swtich wire.

Also available is 2.5mm 3 core, 4mm 3 core and 6mm 3 core all available in yellow and blue.

Armoured cable for permanent fixtures is all available from stock if you are undertaking an external permanent fixed installation. We stock the usual sizes in 3 core and 4 core up to 16mm armoured cable, but we do not stop here - we stock in 3 core and 4 core 25mm armoured cable available to buy today.

Jointing kits are also available off the shelf to join the armoured cable - no need for special order here - all armoured cable joint kits are available up to 300 - 400mm.

Don't forget your cleats and glands - often overlooked, but our expert staff are always on hand to ensure you have everything for your job.

All our cables are designed with the environment in mind - thereby intended to reduce harmful effects and maintain eco friendliness.
